About us

Spira Centrum is a care organisation working within the Dutch youth care system. We treat children, young people and their families in the settings where they actually live: at home, at school and in their community.

  • We understand first, then act

Every trajectory starts with understanding. How is this child developing, what does the behaviour mean here, and what does the family need? Only then do we build a plan together.

  • Behaviour is communication

Behind difficult behaviour there is almost always something a child cannot yet express. So we work on communication as the foundation, not on the behaviour alone.

  • The family's culture counts

Parenting, language and values differ from family to family. Our treatment connects to that rather than working around it.

Our mission

Through treatment, we help children and families strengthen resilience, autonomy and participation in society. Good treatment is always personal: it fits the child, the family and the environment they live in.

Our vision

We want youth care in which children are helped early, coherently and with respect, in close cooperation between family, professionals and school. What we work towards is sustainable development, not the quick removal of a symptom.

Sometimes that means a trajectory takes longer than a short course of treatment. It also means we finish once a family can continue on its own.

Where we work

We work on an outpatient basis, which means we come to the child rather than the other way round. In practice that is usually at home or at school, and sometimes at our practice location or another place that is familiar to the child.

We serve Amstelveen, Groningen and Friesland.

Who we are

Spira Centrum was founded by four youth care professionals and works with behavioural specialists, educational psychologists and practitioners. Where needed we work with other disciplines, for example speech and language therapy.

We operate within Dutch law and regulation and are building our quality system along HKZ principles.

What we look at when we start

  • The child's developmental profile
  • The family's values, culture and expectations
  • Environmental factors that influence behaviour
  • What the child can already do in communication and self-regulation

Our core values

  • Respect and dignity in every interaction
  • Attention to cultural difference
  • Professional integrity and accountability
  • Transparency and clear communication
  • Working with the whole system around a child
  • Continuous improvement and quality assurance
